US diplomat pledges assistance in removing Sudan from terrorism list

Khartoum, Sudan (PANA) - The Charge d'Affaires of the United States in Khartoum, Steven Koutsis, has pledged to work with the Sudanese government in an effort to remove Sudan from the list of state sponsors of terrorism, and hailed Khartoum's severance of relations with North Korea.

The Al-Sudani daily newspaper on Friday quoted Koutsis as saying in a speech he made at a ceremony marking the American national anniversary on 4 July, that North Korea is a top priority of the US national security.

"We would like to affirm our appreciation to the measures taken by Sudan and by all our allies and partners around the world for supporting our diplomatic and economic pressures on the North Korean regime," Koutsis said.

He said in the party which was attended by Sudanese officials and foreign diplomats that there are many challenges "most of which must be resolved by the Sudanese."

Without specifying those challenges, Koutsis, however, said he could not deny that as long as the Sudan remained on the list of state sponsors of terrorism, it would be difficult to overcome those challenges.
