US: US expresses 'deep concern' about escalation of violence in Tripoli

Washington, DC US (PANA) - The United States has expressed its "deep concern" about the escalation of violence between armed groups in Tripoli and called on all the parties to immediately heed the Government of National Accord’s (GNA) appeal to cease fighting.

"We urge all parties to de-escalate tensions in the capital and respect the terms of the Libyan political agreement, including security arrangements for the withdrawal of armed groups from Libyan cities and their replacement with government army and police units," Mr Mark Toner, Deputy Spokesperson of the US State Department said at a press briefing in Washington on Monday.

He reiterated the "strong support" of the US for Prime Minister Fayiz al-Saraj and the GNA and for the quick restoration of order and security for the people of Libya.

The Libyan capital, Tripoli, has seen heavy clashes among rival militias raising concern among the international community.
