US: US Mission in Somalia commences operation

Washington, DC, US (PANA) - The US Mission to Somalia has commenced operation, the US State Department announced in a statement obtained by PANA here Wednesday.

However, it said the Mission would operate out of the US Embassy in Nairobi, Kenya, and would be headed by a Charge d'Affaires pending the appointment of a US Ambassador to Somalia.

The State Department said the new mission reflected a continuation of U.S. efforts to normalize the U.S.-Somalia bilateral relationship since recognizing the Federal Government of Somalia on 17 January 2013.

The launch of the U.S. Mission to Somalia is the next step towards re-establishing a diplomatic presence by the United States in Somalia, as announced by Secretary of State John Kerry on 5 May 2015, during his historic visit to Mogadishu.

According to the State Department, the U.S. officials will continue to travel to Somalia to conduct official business as security conditions permit.
