Kigali- Rwanda (PANA) -- The UN refugee agency, UNHCR, on Tuesday strongly condemned sexual violence in refugee camps in Rwanda, and called on government authorities to tackle the phenomenon.
In a statement published in Kigali, the UNHCR reported 70 cases of rape, in which 25 percent of victims were less than 18 years of age.
The agency promised to launch a campaign to draw the attention of authorities, civil society and the media on the risks of the spread of HIV in refugee camps.
"We hope that this multi-sectoral approach will enable us to tackle some major problems arising from this non-civic behaviour," said Tane Bamba, the UNHCR representative in Rwanda.
There are currently a dozen refugee camps in Rwanda, mainly hosting nationals from Burundi and DR Congo.
