UNAIDS Chief visits Burundi

Bujumbura, Burundi (PANA) – The Executive Director of the United Nations Agency for HIV/AIDS, Michel Sidibi, has begun a three-day working visit to Burundi, so says a communiqué from the UN Office in Burundi.

It said the visit to the Central African country coincided with the celebration of the national day against AIDS, to be marked Wednesday.

"My visit is to encourage Burundi to speed up efforts towards the implementation of the world plan to tackle the new HIV-related infections affecting children by 2015 and their mothers while enabling easier access to anti-retroviral drugs and care for infected persons," the communique indicated.

Burundi is part of the 22 countries worldwide where tremendous efforts are being made in the fight against mother-to-child transmission by 2015, the UN Office in Burundi said.
