UNAMID reports â~unpredictableâ? situation in Darfur

Dar es Salaam- Tanzania (PANA) -- The security situation in Darfur remains relati vely calm but unpredictable, the UN-African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) sai d in a media briefing Friday following unconfirmed reports of clashes in the Jabe l Marra area of west Darfur.
While continuing with the process of verifying the reports, UNAMID said it was p lanning a humanitarian mission in collaboration with humanitarian agencies, to m e et the needs of the newly-displaced persons, who have fled the region in the pas t months.
Clashes have caused displacements to a number of villages and internally-displac ed persons (IDP) settlements, mainly Nertiti, Guldo and Thur, in West Darfur.
A UNAMID team from Kass and Nertiti in South Darfur, which is the closest UNAMID location, conducted verification patrol to villages around Derribat and Fanga S u k including Thur and Nyawu villages in North and South Darfur on 3 March.
The team interacted with the Sheikhs (traditional leaders) of the new arrivals w ho informed that about 7,000 persons had been displaced to Thur in the last two w eeks, and require humanitarian assistance, according to the brief.
