UN finances school nutrition programme in Cape Verde

Praia, Cape Verde (PANA) – The UN System in Cape Verde will grant US$ 5,611,000 by 2014 to Praia in support of school feeding programme in the archipelago, PANA learnt in Praia from the UN agency.

The programme aims to consolidate the Millennium Development Goals in Cape Verde, by guaranteeing quality of education including heavy school enrolment.

The Cape Verde Foundation for School Social Action (FICASE), the ministries of Education, Rural Environment, Marine Resources, Health and the United Nations will execute the programme that will be coordinated by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

Financed by the government of Luxembourg, four UN agencies - FAO, WFP, WHO and UNICEF.- will participate in the programme which is a responce to the challenges posed in Cape Verde.

School feeding programme was introduced in Cape Verde in 1979, the initiative covers all schools in the archipelago and has helped to boost enrollment rates in the country.
