UN envoy commends Rwanda's efforts to combat Aids

Kigali- Rwanda (PANA) -- The UN Secretary General's Special Envoy on HIV/Aids, Ambassador Stephen Lewis, Friday commended efforts being made by Rwanda to combat the spread of the disease.
The UN official had called on Rwandan President Paul Kagame who briefed him about the challenges his country faces in the wake of Aids.
"Ambassador Lewis commended the Rwanda government for the very high level of public awareness about HIV/Aids, particularly knowledge among the youth about how the disease is spread, and how they can protect themselves against it," a statement from the President's Office said.
Lewis said he was pleased by the government's total commitment to combating the disease and noted that Rwanda could not be expected to deal with the task alone.
Lewis said that he expects Rwanda to be among beneficiaries of the newly established Global Aids Fund when it becomes operational later this year.
