UN chief to highlight development goals at AU Summit

New York- US (PANA) -- UN Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon is expected to speak to heads of state and government at the 14th African Union (AU) Summit this weekend , at which he will highlight "the need for African leaders to work towards achiev i ng the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)'', according to a UN statement made a v ailable to PANA here.
It said ``On Sunday, Ban will deliver an opening address to the Heads of State a nd Government and their representatives at the summit.
He will highlight the nee d for African leaders to mobilize behind the achievement of the Millennium Develo p ment Goals (MDGs), especially with the MDGs deadline of 2015 fast approaching.
'' It also stated that the secretary-general would be urging African leaders to att end the summit on the MDGs that he is organising in September, where leaders are expected to generate a concrete plan for advancing action on the MDGs.
``Ban will also be raising vital issues of regional cooperation, especially with important elections to be held this year in Sudan, Cote d'Ivoire and Guinea,'' i t said.
``He will also discuss climate change and its potentially devastating impact on Africa, as well as the important role that African leaders can play in supportin g the Copenhagen Accord,'' the statement concluded.
