UN Security Council to hold informal session on Libya

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - The UN Security Council will hold an informal consultative session on Tuesday On developments in Libya during which members will hear briefing from the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).

A publication on the UN Political and Peacebuilding Affairs website said the UN Mission and the sanctions committee will provide a briefing and report on the situation in Libya.

The meeting comes just days after violent clashes between armed groups supporting the two rival governments in Libya -- the Government of National Unity of Prime Minister Abdelhamid al-Dbaiba and the parliament-appointed Government of National Stability (GNS) of Prime Minister Fathi Bachagha -- left 32 people dead and 159 wounded, as well as extensive damage to public and private property.

This deterioration of the security situation in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, is the result of the evolution of the executive problem that has arisen in the country since the emergence of two competing governments after the impasse in the political process resulting from the postponement of the 24 December elections.

The elections set within the framework of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPFF) under the auspices of the United Nations as part of the transition could not be organised due to political conditions, insecurity and legal appeals against candidates.

This indicated shortcomings inherent in the electoral laws, according to the Libyan High National Electoral Commission.

Even attempts by the former UN Secretary-General's Special Adviser on Libya, the American Stephanie Williams, to revive the electoral process, were not successful.
