UN: UNESCO chief condemns killing of Somali media worker

New York, US (PANA) - UNESCO head Irina Bokova has denounced the recent killing of a Somali news editor, Abdullahi Ali Hussein.

"Extremists must not be allowed to stifle freedom of expression with their violence and intimidation, and free and vibrant media, with committed journalists, have an essential contribution to make to the rule of law and good governance in Somalia," Ms. Bokova said in a statement obtained by PANA in New York on Wednesday.

The statement noted that the Somali editor for the news website Waagasucub was shot dead in the capital, Mogadishu, on 8 Sept.
