UN: New UNAIDS regional director for West, Central Africa assumes duties in Dakar

New York, US (PANA) - The newly-appointed UN Joint Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS)
Regional Director for West and Central Africa, Dr. Djibril Diallo, has assumed duties in Dakar, Senegal.

PANA in New York on Wednesday learnt that Diallo was in December, 2015 appointed by the UNAIDS Executive Director, Mr. Michel Sidibe, to succeed Dr. Meskerem Grunitzky-Bekele, who has retired.

A UNAIDS statement said that the new director, who assumed duties on 4 January 2016, has over 30 years of experience in international relations. He has also served as the Senior Adviser to the UNAIDS Executive Director.

It noted that Diallo has spearheaded initiatives for global advocacy of HIV and AIDS, including the “Protect the Goal” campaign and in his work with mayors of African descent he has mobilized support to advance UNAIDS’ Fast-Track Cities initiative.

Prior to joining UNAIDS, Diallo served as the Director of the United Nations New York Office of Sports for Development and Peace from 2004 to 2008, Director of the Communications Office of the Administrator of UNDP from 1995 to 2005, and Special Adviser to UNICEF's Executive Director for nine years.

A citizen of Senegal, the new regional director earned a Ph.D. in Linguistics and Communications from the University of London, and his work for peace and sustainable growth and development has been recognized by numerous national and international
