UN: France urged to bring CAR child abuse troops to trial

New York, US (PANA) - The Chairperson of the UN Human Rights Committee, Mr. Fabian
Salvioli, on Friday urged France to ensure that those responsible for alleged abuses
against minors in Central African Republic (CAR) are brought to trial.

A UN statement, obtained by PANA in New York, said the recommendation was among
issues raised by the committee during its sitting in Geneva to assess how France and
six other UN member states apply international human rights law.

In its concluding observations on France, the Committee said it had raised
the issue of allegations of child sexual abuses by French soldiers in CAR, who were
sent to the CAR to help African Union peacekeepers in 2013 and 2014.

It said that, in response, the French delegation had indicated that the matter was being
taken seriously and that an investigation was under way.

The statement also quoted Mr. Salvioli, as saying: "The French delegation said they
are investigating the matter and also they acknowledged that it is a serious issue, and
will start prosecution, but needed more information."

He added that the UN rights committee has requested that further information be
provided within a year, in order to deal with the issue.
