UN: Canada renews commitment to promoting gender equality globally

New York, US (PANA) - Canada on Friday renewed its commitment to promote gender equality and women empowerment globally to enhance sustainable growth and development.

In a statement, circulated at the ongoing UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), a copy of which was obtained by PANA in New York, Canada stated that it is running for a seat on the CSW for the 2017 to 2021 term, in order to strengthen Canada’s voice in shaping the Commission’s work to address the challenges women and girls face around the world.

It stated: "This effort also reflects Canada’s support for the United Nations, and its commitment to play a positive and constructive role in the world."

It noted that Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau actively participated in the 60th session of the CSW, including being designated a 'champion' of UN Women’s 'HeForShecampaign', which underscored the high level leadership role Canada is taking on.

The statement also said that 'HeForShe' is a solidarity movement that called on men and boys to stand up against the persistent inequalities faced by women and girls globally.

It said that Canada's panel discussion held on the sidelines of the CSW had focused on creating pathways to equality for indigenous women and girls, as well as provided valuable insights that will contribute to the Canada's engagement with Indigenous communities moving forward.

It disclosed that Canada’s delegation to this year’s CSW session included representation from provincial and territorial governments, and non-governmental organizations, including Indigenous women’s organizations.
