UN: Business leaders commit millions for gender equality

New York, US (PANA) - Leading global companies and foundations have committed millions in additional financing for gender equality at a Business and Philanthropy Leaders’ Forum organized by UN Women on Sunday in New York.

A UN statement obtained by PANA in New York Sunday said achieving gender equality was fundamental to realizing the transformative promise of the historic 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals, adopted by a high-level UN Summit on Friday.

But deep financing gaps for women and girls pose significant barriers to rapid progress.

It said commitments at the forum were aimed at closing these, and the participants backed a major global drive, championed by UN Women, to “Step It Up” for gender equality.

UN Women co-hosted the forum with the Chinese technology investment giant, Alibaba Group, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

The forum takes place ahead of the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment - a Commitment to Action, which will bring an unprecedented number of Heads of State and Government together to commit to actions for achieving gender equality by 2030.

UN Women is the UN organization dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women.

A global champion for women and girls, UN Women was established to accelerate progress on meeting their needs worldwide.
