Two Senegalese soldiers, seven rebels killed in Casamance

Ziguinchor- Senegal (PANA) -- Two soldiers of the Senegalese army and seven presu med members of the Casamance Democratic Forces Movement (MFDC) were killed on Tu e sday evening in clashes that took place in the Djibidione area in Southern Seneg a l, military sources in Ziguinchor told PANA.
The clashes took place when armed men opened fire on an army patrol which was ca rrying out an operation aimed at protecting the people and goods in the area, a s ource told PANA.
"Our elements were in full operation when they came under fire from armed men wh o attacked them.
This resulted in the death of two soldiers and two others wound e d," one Senegalese soldier declared, affirming that seven assailants were killed .
The death of the two soldiers was confirmed by sources close to the Regional Hos pital of Ziguinchor, indicating that two injured soldiers were admitted into the intensive care unit.
"One of our patrols operating in the Djibidione area for the past few days to se cure the people and their goods was attacked by armed individuals who opened fir e on them," the communication officer of the South Military Zone, Lieutenant Mala m ine Camara, said.
He added that the army discovered several fields of Indian hemp in the area.
