Two Burkinabe soldiers killed in two attacks

Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso (PANA) - Two Burkinabe soldiers and four volunteer fighters (VDP) were killed in two attacks on Wednesday and Thursday in the Sahel and North-West of Burkina Faso, the army announced in a statement.

On Thursday 2 June 2022, the Defence and Security Forces of the town of Djibo (Soum Province) foiled an attempt by a group of armed individuals to loot several shops.

The attackers fired shells simultaneously at the base of the Gendarmerie's security and intervention unit (PSIG) and the 14th Inter-Arms Regiment while others tried to storm the shops.

"The reaction of the units allowed the neutralization of at least seven of the assailants and the routing of several others," the army said, stressing that the shells fired unfortunately caused the death of one soldier and four VDP.

Eight other wounded soldiers were treated and evacuated.

"The situation is currently under control and security actions are continuing in the area," the army said, noting that this incident shows a clear willingness of the terrorist groups in the area, out of breath, to supply themselves with food and basic necessities.

Another incident occurred Wednesday, 1 June 2022, in the vicinity of Gomboro (Sourou Province). A unit on an offensive reconnaissance mission clashed with a group of terrorists a few kilometres from Gomboro, according to the army.

"An officer, unfortunately, lost his life during the fighting," the source said. The Chief of General Staff of the Armed Forces offered his condolences to the relatives of the soldiers and VDP who died in these attacks.

He wished a speedy recovery to the wounded and urged all units to maintain pressure on the armed groups who are showing more and more signs of weakness.
