Addis Ababa- Ethiopia (PANA) -- Twenty nine African Union (AU) member countries h ave signed the convention on internally displaced persons (IDP), and more are ex p ected to follow suit soon, a senior official said on Thursday.
AU commissioner for political affairs Julia Dolly Joiner said three countries - Ethiopia, Mauritania and Sierra Leone - had since ratified the convention.
The convention aims to protect and assist IDPs in Africa, most of them victims o f conflict.

She said the convention, which was adopted in Uganda last year, now only require d 15 signatures to come into force.
