Tunisian President holds talks with Algerian counterpart on Tunisian crisis

Tunis, Tunisia (PANA) - The Tunisian president Kais Saied and his Algerian counterpart Abdelmadjid Tebboune have spoken by phone on the political situation in Tunisia, the Algerian presidency has said.

It provided no details of their discussion.

The United States, United Nations, European Union, Russia, Libya and Arab League and human rights groups have called for dialogue and respect for the rule of law in Tunisia which has slid into a crisis after President Saied suspended parliament for 30 days and assumed some judicial powers.

Following violent demonstrations on Sunday in several cities over deteriorating health, economic and social situations President Saied sacked Prime Minister Hichem Mechichi, Minister of Defence, Brahim Bartagi and the Minister of Civil Service and Acting Minister of Justice, Hasna Ben Slimane, and imposed a night-time curfew for one month.

Speaker of Parliament, Rached Ghanouchi, who is the leader of the Islamist Ennahda party, has denounced the actions of President Saied as "a coup" saying they are contrary to the provisions of the Constitution.
