Cotonou- Benin (PANA) -- The Tunisian delegation to the preparatory meeting of th e 10th Summit of the Community of Sahelo-Sahara States (CEN-SAD) scheduled for T u esday and Wednesday in Cotonou has called for the establishment of a regional fo o d security observatory in the Community.
According to the Tunisian delegation, the establishment of an observatory would ensure monitoring of availability of agricultural products, price movements of c e reals and investments in the growth of agriculture with the aim of preventing fo o d crisis.
To achieve this objective, it said, the structure should be responsible for moni toring natural resources such as water, soil, evaluation of agricultural and liv e stock production and formulating strategies and policies based on food availabil i ty and needs.
Member states, executive organs of the African Union and sub-regional organizati ons will be stakeholders in the project that would be financed by member states a nd partners.
The delegation said Tunisia had established structures for monitoring the enviro nment and drought in conjunction with a set of interested players and this had g i ven the country a full grasp of environmental trends during the last decade.
