Tunisia: About 1,400 living with HIV in Tunisia

Tunis, Tunisia (PANA) – Persons living with HIV in Tunisia are currently estimated at 1,400 with males being the majority, according to the coordinator Tunisian National Programme for Control of HIV/AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Diseases, Hayatt Hamoudi.

Speaking on the eve of the International AIDS Day, she said that since 1986 when the first case of AIDS was diagnosed in Tunisia until 31 October 2014, about 2,008 cases of HIV/AIDS have been recorded in the country including 585 AIDS-related deaths.

According to the official, unprotected sex was the main cause of HIV infection while on average 100 new cases are reported annually in Tunisia.
