Trump under fire for wading into SA land debate

Johannesburg, South Africa (PANA) – US President Donald Trump has hit a nerve with Pretoria by tweeting that he has asked his Secretary of State to look into land expropriation and the killing of farmers in South Africa.

Both issues are being addressed by President Cyril Ramaphosa as he attempts to redress the apartheid-era land theft while, at the same time, appeasing potential investors.

Trump waded into the racially charged issue and triggered a selloff in the rand currency on Thursday.

The Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Lindiwe Sisulu expressed concern at Trump’s “unfortunate comments”.

“It is regrettable that the tweet is based on false information,” she said adding that her department has issued an urgent request to meet with officials at the US Embassy in Pretoria “to seek clarification on the matter”.

Sisulu said she will also communicate with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on the matter “through diplomatic channels”.

Minister of Land Reform Maite Nkoana-Mashabane responded to Trump’s tweet by saying “only solutions on land reform that are South African will work”.

Trump came under fire earlier this year when lawmakers quoted him as referring to “shit-hole” African countries. He denied making the disparaging remarks.
