Top UN official in Libya urges Parliament to give positive response to her mediation initiative

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - The UN Secretary-General's Special Adviser on Libya, Stephanie Williams, has called on Parliament to expedite a positive response to her proposal to form a joint committee to work towards achieving constitutional rule.

The call came during a meeting she held with members of Parliament in the Tunisian capital, she said in a tweet on Wednesday.

She said the MPs presented their views on the current situation, as well as their visions on the way forward, stressing that the meeting discussed in detail the UN proposal to form a joint committee.

The UN official also stressed the importance of rebuilding a consensus between the two chambers in order to hold elections as soon as possible.

Ms. Williams, following the political stalemate after the postponement of the elections and the emergence of two competing governments, accentuating tension, proposed the formation of a joint committee composed of six members each between Parliament and the High Council of State to develop a constitutional basis on which to hold general elections as soon as possible.

The High Council, which welcomed the proposal, appointed 12 representatives, with an extra six members, taking into account the representation of women and cultural minorities, while Parliament has so far not given a clear answer as to whether it will participate in this initiative.
