Togo to build new presidential palace

Lome- Togo (PANA) -- Togolese President Gnassingbé Eyadéma on Thursday laid the foundation stone for a new presidential palace to be constructed in Lomé.
The new state house will be located near Eyadema's private residence in Lomé II in the capital city's northern part.
The Chinese Beijing Construction Company will build the new palace on a 6343-square metre plot.
The Chinese ambassador to Togo said during a brief foundation stone laying ceremony that the building will symbolise the friendly cooperation between China and Togo.
The envoy promised that China will build a "high quality monument" within 13 months.
The new state house will replace the former palace that was not large enough to host all services worthy of a presidential palace.
The cost of the project was not revealed.
Two years ago, Eyadema abandoned the former presidential palace located at about two kilometres from the Togo-Ghana border.
No official explanation was given for the move.
