Togo: West African ministers support proposed education fund

Lome, Togo (PANA) – West African ministers of education have agreed to support the proposed  African Education Fund and an enhanced quality assurance system, a regional education organisation said.

The  ministers of education met 28-29 September in Lome, Togo, to discuss quality assurance in the education sector and agreed to support the launch of the education fund, the Association for the Development of Education in Africa (ADEA) said in a statement Thursday.

Ministers of education from the Economic Community of West African States  (ECOWAS) also discussed  the creation of a central quality assurance organisation and mutual recognition of academic certificates, ADEA said.

They agreed to support the standard requirement for at least nine years of basic education in all countries, besides discussing the improvement of science and technology, engineering and mathematics education across the region.

The 11 ministers of basic and higher education met in Lome, to discuss education as an emergency issue over the next 10 years. They also considered the creation of a regional Education Management Information System.
