Togo: Preparations for International Women's Day underway in Togo

Lome, Togo (PANA) - Civil society organizations, NGOs and government ministries involved in the promotion of law and the empowerment of women in Togo have committed to take concrete steps to eliminate disparities and discrimination hindering the inclusiveness and sustainable development of mankind, the Ministry of Social Action, Promotion of Women and Literacy said on Friday.

According to a statement issued by the ministry in Lome, the commitment should enable Togo to set priorities to achieve the goal of an egalitarian country in terms of gender by 2030.

It said that institutions involved in the empowerment of women announced their pledge on 18 February 2016 ahead of the International Women’s Day, marked on 8 March each year, stating that elimination of gender inequality remains a major concern of all States since the Fourth World Conference on Women that was held in Beijing in 1995, until the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), through the 2063 agenda of the African Union.

Togo has selected as national theme "Equal Rights and Equal Opportunities for Emerging Togo 2030” for this year’s International Women’s Day while UN Women is celebrating the same day under the theme “Planet 50-50 by 2030: Step It Up for Gender Equality”.

The United Nations observance will reflect on how to accelerate the 2030 Agenda, building momentum for the effective implementation of the new Sustainable Development Goals.

It will equally focus on new commitments under UN Women’s Step It Up initiative, and other existing commitments on gender equality, women’s empowerment and women’s human rights.
