Tanzania starts three-day mourning of Mandela

Dar es Salaam, Tanzania (PANA) – Tanzania is mourning the passing of former South African President Nelson Mandela for three days during which the national flag will be flown at half-mast, President Jakaya Kikwete announced on Friday.

In a condolence message to South African President Jacob Zuma and Lady Graca Machel,  Mandela’s widow, the Mandela family and the entire South African nation, Kikwete said everybody around the world was grieved by the death.

“The world has lost a great person and hero of both the 20th and 21st  centuries. We understand the pain that South Africans feel in the loss of such a brave, revolutionary and persevering leader,” the president eulogised.

According to Kikwete, Mandela was exceptionally illustrious by his forgiving, compassionate and loving heart that enabled him to unite all South Africans as a nation after a protracted struggle against apartheid.

“Mandela is an unsurpassed example of a civilised person. All people of South Africa, the African continent and the world at large should emulate Mandela, particularly with regard to his patriotic heart that led him to surrender his life for his compatriots,” the president said.

“Let us pray the Almighty God to rest the soul of Mzee (Old) Mandela in eternal peace,” Kikwete said.
