Sudan: US congratulates Sudan, Chad, UNHCR over signed repatriation deal

Khartoum, \Sudan (PANA) - The US embassies in Khartoum, Sudan, and Ndjamena, Chad, have congratulated the Sudan, Chad and the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) following the tripartite deal they signed to facilitate the voluntary repatriation of Sudanese refugees in Chad and Chadian refugees in Sudan.

The US embassy in Khartoum, acting on behalf of itself and that of Ndjamena, issued a press statement on Sunday on the congratulatory messages, saying that the deals lay down the legal framework to facilitate the voluntary, safe and dignified returns of the refugees to their respective home countries.

This measure, according to the embassy, is welcomed as the world is witnessing historic levels of population displacements.

The tripartite agreement was signed early this month to regulate the repatriation of hundreds of thousands of refugees from Chad to the Sudan and vice versa.

In a joint statement after the deal was sealed, the trio said the agreements, signed in Khartoum, was within the internationally-accepted legal standards governing the voluntary repatriation of refugees and which all the Parties are fully committed to.
