Sudan: UN Refugee Agency chief commends Sudan's cooperation

Khartoum, Sudan (PANA) - United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Filippo Grandi, has expressed gratitude to Sudan for cooperation with the UN and its refugee agency in assisting refugees.

During his meeting with Sudanese Foreign Minister Ibrahim Ghandour here on Wednesday, Grandi said that the international community highly appreciated what Sudan offers the refugees by sharing its meager resources with them.

According to Sudan News Agency (SUNA), the High Commissioner asked the international community to provide additional support to Sudan because it "shoulders the responsibility on behalf of the international community."

Grandi also hinted that his agency and the UN system support the call for lifting economic sanctions imposed on Sudan by the United States in order to help the country achieve full stability and sustainable development.

Meanwhile, Ghandour noted that the visit to Sudan by the High Commissioner should make the international community recognize the role being played by the country to host refugees from a number of countries, especially those from South Sudan.

He indicated that the international community should shoulder its responsibilities of providing assistance to the refugees and to the host communities which support them.

Ghandour underlined the need for intensive efforts to find a political solution to the armed conflict in South Sudan as it would resolve all problems and remove all impacts of the war on the population.
