Sudan: Nigerian UNAMID peacekeeper killed in Nyala, South Darfur

Khartoum, Sudan (PANA) - A Nigerian soldier with the United Nations Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) was killed on Wednesday by an unidentified armed group in Darfur, a press release by the peace keeping mission said on Thursday.

The press statement, received by PANA in Khartoum on Thursday, said that on 31 May 2017, a UNAMID military peacekeeper in Darfur was killed by an unidentified group in a carjacking incident in Nyala, South Darfur State.

"UNAMID strongly condemns this attack, which constitutes a violation of international law," the release stressed, adding that the incident has been reported to the relevant Sudanese authorities, calling on the Government of Sudan to swiftly apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

"The Mission extends its deepest condolences to the family of the late peacekeeper, his colleagues, and the Federal Government of Nigeria," it said.
