Sudan: Bashir not barred from another term as president - NCP

Khartoum, Sudan (PANA) - An official of the ruling National Congress Party (NCP) of Sudan has said there is nothing preventing incumbent President Omar Al Bashir from being renominated by the party for reelection in 2015.

The organizational rules of the ruling National Congress Party (NCP) did not bar incumbent President Omar Al Bashir from nomination to another term for the presidency, the head of the NCP Organization Sector, Hamid Siddeik, said on Wednesday.

He told reporters that according to the rules of the party, President Bashir was not prohibited from the next presidential election. His nomination would be decided by the Party in its next Shura meeting, Siddeik said.

Bashir came to power in a bloodless coup d'état on 30 June, 1989. Since then he has stood twice in presidential elections, the latest of which was in 2010, a year before South Sudan opted for independence and separated from the Sudan.

On all previous occasions President Bashir had announced he did not seek to stand for office, but the party nominated him as its only candidate.

Although the official did not give a date for the Shura meeting, it had long been announced that it would be held next October.

It is not clear whether this date would be changed or not, depending on the outcome of the ongoing national dialogue between Bashir’s NCP and the opposition parties which may insist on a transitional government.
