Port Louis- Mauritius (PANA) -- A fresh study has shown that women remained the most vulnerable group in Mauritius, the MATERA news agency reported Monday.
It quoted the UNDP-funded study as revealing that women are still the most vulnerable group in Mauritius having the most insecure jobs, the lowest salaries, longer unemployment periods and sufferers of persistent domestic violence.
Some 17 percent of households headed by women live below the poverty line, as compared to 8 percent of households headed by men, according to the study which recommends a redefinition of the term "head of family", taking into account its heterogeneous nature.
The study, requested by the Ministry of Women's Affairs and conducted by the De Chazal du Mée firm, will help planners to prepare a national plan of action to strengthen the status women in Mauritius, the news report said.
