State funeral for Mandela under way

Qunu, South Africa (PANA) - A state funeral is under way on Sunday for former South African President Nelson Mandela in Qunu, his ancestral home in the Eastern Cape.

This will end a week of ceremonies to pay respects to South Africa's first black leader who died on 5 December.

There are 95 candles lit at the state funeral, each representing one year of the life of the anti-apartheid icon and Nobel peace laureate.

More than 4,000 people, including members of the Mandela family, top political leaders of South Africa and foreign dignitaries, are attending the funeral at the Mandela family home in Qunu.

Mandela will be laid to rest at a private burial.

Tens of thousands of people filed past his body for three days in Pretoria.
