South African Airways cancels flights to New York

Cape Town, South Africa (PANA) – South African Airways (SAA) has cancelled flights between Johannesburg and New York after JFK Airport was partially crippled by severe weather that affected its operations.

In addition, a major water leak has flooded the  baggage claim area, compounding flight cancellations and other problems caused by the cold front.

The national carrier cancelled its flights on Saturday and Sunday after the airport was forced to partially closed on Thursday. Incoming flights were diverted to other airports.

SAA was able to operate one flight, SA9204 from New York to Johannesburg on Friday and another one from Johannesburg to New York, SA203 on the same day.

"We apologise to our customers for the inconvenience caused by these cancellations which are associated with the effects of the East Coast Winter Storm. SAA is doing everything possible to minimise the impact of the inconvenience as a result of these cancellations," said ailine spokesperson Tlali Tlali.
