South Africa shortlists artists for national awards

Cape Town- South Africa (PANA) -- Eighty-three young artists from across South Africa have been named as finalists for the national Absa Atelier Art Awards 2001, the longest established and most prominent visual art competition in the country.
Their works were selected from 600 entries, and the winner and merit award winners would be announced at a gala in Johannesburg on 18 July.
Absa will give the winner 7,500 dollars in cash, a round trip to France and six months accommodation at the renowned artist colony, the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris.
The Absa Atelier Awards, now in its 16th year, offers artists the largest prize money for a competition of its kind in the country.
