South Africa: Formula One legend races in Cape Town

Cape Town, South Africa (PANA)   -   Formula One legend David Coulthard drew tens of thousands of spectators to a custom street track in the Cape Town city centre where he raced a Red Bull F1 car.

Coulthard, who secured 13 Grand Prix victorious and 62 podium finishes during an illustrious career, powered his Aston Martin Red Bull past the city’s Grand Parade and the spot where former world statesman Nelson Mandela addressed the world for the first time following his release from prison in 1990.

Red Bull Racing has taken the thrills of Formula One to cities like Hanoi, Tokyo and Mexico City and performed in South Africa for the first time since 2011.

“South Africa has a great heritage in Formula One, stretching back to 1962,” said team boss Christian Horner

Johannesburg’s Kyalami race track hosted many Grand Prix races over the decades until 1993, and South African Jody Schekter won the 1979 world championship for Ferrari.

Formula One is now considering a return to Africa, with the Moroccan city of Marrakesh and Kyalami both in the running.

"It’s a marketplace in which we would like to race," said Formula One managing director Sean Bratches late last month.
