South Africa: South African film scoops major awards

Cape Town, South Africa (PANA) – Nigerian-born South African filmmaker, Akin Omotoso, has expressed disbelief after his latest film, Vaya, received 11 nominations in all the top categories of the 2017 Africa Movie Academy Awards (Amaas) – the most any film on the continent has received.

It was followed by the Nigerian period film ’76, Queen of Katwe (Uganda) and 93 Days, about the Ebola crisis which was also produced in Nigeria.

Omotosa said the acclaimed picture which had its premiere in Toronto last year is gaining momentum as it continues to reach new markets.

The film which weaves together three stories of people who have been left homeless features Mary Twala, Sihle Xaba, Zimkhitha Nyoka and Warren Masemola.

Vaya is expected to be released to South African cinemas later this year.
