South Africa: SAA cancels US flights over storms

Cape Town, South Africa (PANA) – South African Airways (SAA) on Friday announced that it has cancelled flights between Johannesburg and Washington DC via Accra, Ghana, with immediate effect.

This is after severe weather associated with “Winter Storm Jonas” moved across the eastern United States where severe blizzard conditions are expected to cripple large parts of the region. The federal government in Washington is closing at midday on Friday because of the storm.

SAA spokesperson Tlali Tlali said both outbound and inbound flights between Johannesburg and Washington DC on Friday and Saturday have been cancelled.  SAA operates daily between Johannesburg and New York City and Washington DC.

Tlali said the national carrier is monitoring the situation on a continuous basis with airport authorities in New York
