South Africa: Mandela's grandson gets bail in rape case

Cape Town, South Africa (PANA) – Mbuso Mandela, the grandson of former South African president Nelson Mandela, who is accused of raping a 15-year-old teenager was granted bail on Tuesday.

The 24-year-old suspect was released on US$700 bail. He has spent the past few days in custody while police investigated the incident.

The alleged incident occurred at a bar in the leafy Johannesburg suburb of Greenside on 7 Aug. 2015, and a case was opened at the Parkview Police Station several days later.

Through his family, the suspect has claimed that he and the complainant had consensual sex and that she was aged 16.

Earlier this year, Mandla Mandela, the oldest of the former President’s grandsons, was convicted of assaulting a 40-year-old motorist during a road-rage incident.

Also, Mandela's ex-wife Winnie Madikizela-Mandela is embroiled in a legal dispute over Mandela’s Qunu homestead in the Eastern Cape which she claims is rightfully hers, despite the fact that the couple went through a painful and high-profile divorce in the 1990s amid allegations that she had an extramarital affair.

Nelson Mandela, who became South Africa’s first democratic President in 1994, was jailed for 27 years for fighting against white minority rule under apartheid.

The Nobel Laureate was hailed for his message of racial reconciliation which helped steer the country away from a civil war.

He died at the age of 95 in Johannesburg in December 2013.
