South Africa: Mandela family embroiled in fresh scandal

Cape Town, South Africa (PANA) - In the latest saga to affect the family of the late South Africa President and global icon Nelson Mandela, police have confirmed that a grandson of the former world statesman is facing rape charges.

Mbuso Mandela, a 24-year-old Johannesburg resident, has appeared in a city court after being arrested for the alleged rape and attempted rape of a 15-year-old female at a restaurant in the leafy suburb of Greenside.

The incident allegedly occurred on 7 Aug. 2015, but Police at the Parkview Police Station where the case was opened have refused to provide further information.

Mbuso has been remanded in custody and is expected back at the Johannesburg magistrate court on Friday for a formal bail hearing.

Mandla Mandela, the oldest of the former President’s grandsons, was convicted early this year of assaulting a 40-year-old motorist during a road-rage incident.

Also, Mandela's ex-wife Winnie Madikizela-Mandela is embroiled in a legal dispute over Mandela’s Qunu homestead in the Eastern Cape which she claims is rightfully hers, despite the fact that the couple went through a painful and high-profile divorce in the 1990s amid allegations that she had an extramarital affair.

Nelson Mandela, who became South Africa’s first democratic President in 1994, was jailed for 27 years for fighting against white minority rule under apartheid.

The Nobel Laureate was hailed for his message of racial reconciliation which helped steer the country away from a civil war.

He died at the age of 95 in Johannesburg in December 2013.
