South Africa: Application barring Bashir from leaving SA to be heard on Monday

Johannesburg, South Africa (PANA) – The High Court in Pretoria has postponed the hearing on an urgent application to compel South Africa to arrest Sudanese President Omar Bashir for war crimes and crimes against humanity until Monday morning.

In his ruling, Judge Hans Fabricius reaffirmed that the International Criminal Court (ICC) fugitive may not leave the country until a final order is made in the application.

Bashir who is attending the African Union Summit in Sandton, arrived in Johannesburg on Saturday.

Fabricius also ordered that the Department of Home Affairs must ensure that his ruling is served on all officials in charge of South Africa’s border posts.

The dramatic development came after the Southern African Litigation Centre brought an application for an order compelling the South African government to arrest Bashir in line with the appeal by the ICC.
