South Africa: Abducted South African journalist 'still alive' – Charity

Cape Town, South Africa (PANA) – The Gift of the Givers Foundation, a disaster relief organisation, on Monday said it had established through its networks that South African photojournalist Shiraaz Mohamed, who was abducted in Syria earlier this month, was still alive.

The Johannesburg-based journalist was abducted on 12 January near the Al Hilal Hospital in Syria. Mohamed and two colleagues were en route to the Turkish border to leave Syria when their convoy was stopped.

Gift of the Givers Director Imtiaz Sooliman said he has been reliably informed of the name of the group that is holding Mohamed as well as their location. “It appears that their information is credible," Sooliman said. He said a task team had been established to deal with the matter.

Mohamed, who is a widely respected journalist, started the Ennerdale Sun newspaper seven years ago. Over the past couple of years, he has travelled around the world photographing events like the earthquake in Nepal and floods in Malawi.
