Somalia: New head of UNSOS takes up office in Mogadishu

Mogadishu, Somalia (PANA) - Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Somalia (SRSG) Michael Keating, and Special Representative of the African Union Commission Chairperson (SRCC) for Somalia, Ambassador Francisco Caetano Madeira, on Thursday welcomed Hubert Price to the Somali capital as he took up his new responsibilities as Head of the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS).

Mr. Price will focus on strategic issues posed by the relationship between the UN, the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), and Somali National Security Forces.

In addition, he has assumed overall managerial responsibility for UNSOS while its current Director Amadu Kamara concentrates on day-to-day UNSOS operations.

“We look forward to working with Mr. Price and expect him to make a vital contribution to our engagement with the United Nations, and especially its member states that contribute military and police personnel to AMISOM,” said Madeira.

The position of UNSOS Head was established following the completion of a strategic review of UNSOS in 2015, which recognized the growing responsibilities of UNSOS in support of AMISOM and UNSOM.

Mr. Price brings to his new position over 20 years of experience in United Nations peacekeeping operations that have included assignments in Mozambique, Angola, East Timor, Cote d’Ivoire and Liberia. He most recently served as Acting Assistant Secretary-General for the Department of Field Support at UN headquarters in New York.
