Sero-positive Senegalese undergo anti-retroviral treatment

Dakar- Senegal (PANA) -- Health authorities in Dakar Monday said some 232 Senegalese citizens living with the AIDS virus benefit from anti-retroviral treatment.
A biologist at Le Dantec teaching hospital, Coumba Toure Kane, told doctors at a seminar on anti-retrovirals that the objective was to reach out to 350 sufferers by the end of the year.
With a prevalence rate of 1.
6 percent, Senegal has around 80,000 people living with HIV/AIDS.
"Initial objectives have been widely reached and we plan to decentralise the initiative in order to reach the inner country," another official said.
The cost of treatment varies between 5,000 and 60,000 francs CFA per month (1 US dollar = 750 FCFA).
"Some patients are even treated free within the framework of a programme financed by the Senegalese administration," he affirmed.
