Serena Williams arrives Nigeria on historic visit

Lagos, Nigeria (PANA) - World tennis star Serena Williams of the US arrived in Lagos Tuesday for her first-ever visit to Africa's most populous nation.

She was given a rousing welcome by her fans, who thronged the Murtala Muhammed International Airport to receive her around 3.45 p.m. local time.

Security agents kept journalists and photographers at bay, preventing them from interviewing or taking a snapshot of her.

Serena is in Nigeria at the invitation of the recently launched 'Breaking The Mould' or BTM women's empowerment initiative, which uses national and international women figures considered as Mould Breakers, to showcase how women have achieved greatness across various sectors.

Though the highlight of her visit to Nigeria is supposed to be an exhibition match against her sister, Venus, only Serena arrived on Tuesday. No reason has yet been given as to why Venus failed to arrive.

Serena and Venus were adopted as the 2012 international "Mould Breakers" because the BTM believes they exemplify how determination, passion, hard work and self-belief can turn dreams into reality
