Senior UN official discusses arms smuggling with Darfur governors

El Fasher- Sudan (PANA) -- UN peacekeeping chief Alain Le Roy met with senior pol iticians and state governors in Sudan's Darfur region Tuesday, where he expresse d convern over the continued arms smuggling.
The United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, who has been visiting the region of Darfur, continued his trip in El Geneina, West Darfu r , close to Sudan's common border with Chad for the second day Tuesday, meeting t h e governors to discuss political issues, a UNAMID statement said.
Le Roy held meetings with the Wali (Governor) of West Darfur State, Mr.
Abu Ghas sim, during which several issues of mutual interest, including security, were di s cussed, UNAMID said.
Ghassim was said to have informed Le Roy that the proliferation of arms was a ma jor concern in the area.
However, he gave the assurance that bearing in mind West Darfur's proximity to t he border, the authorities were intent on curbing this trend.
During a visit to Saraf Jedad, where 2,100 internally displaced families recentl y returned voluntarily, Le Roy noted that it was apparent life in the village wa s returning to normal as evidenced by ongoing farming activities being undertaken by the returnees.
He met the village Umdah (traditional) leader and representatives of elders, wom en and youth, among other community leaders, to listen to their concerns.
Meanwhile, Le Roy expressed satisfaction with UNAMID's quick impact projects (QI P) initiative, from which the returnees in Saraf Jedad had already begun to bene f it.
He commended the ongoing collaborative efforts on the front between humanitarian agencies based in the area, the local community and the African Union/United Na t ions Mission in Darfur (UNAMID).
Presenting initial funding from QIP initiative on behalf of UNAMID to assist in rehabilitating a school in the village, USG/DPKO said he hoped work on the proje c t would commence shortly.
Le Roy also used the opportunity to meet UNAMID staff members based in the area.
He was accompanied by UNAMID Joint Special Representative, Mr.
Rodolphe Adada, U NAMID Deputy Force Commander, Major General Duma Mdutyana, Commander of UNAMID t r oops in West Darfur, Brigadier General Balla Keita, West Darfur UN Police Commander, Kalia Sesay and a number of other UNAMID officials.
