Senegalese soldier killed in Casamance

Ziguinchor, Senegal (PANA) - A Senegalese soldier was killed Monday near the Gambian frontier, north of Ziguinchor, in Casamance, during clashes between the Senegalese troops and elements of the Movement of the Democratic Forces of Casamance (MFDC, independence rebellion), PANA learnt from military sources here.

According to the sources, "One sergeant was killed and two other soldiers injured in an operation which started at 3pm local time until late in the evening."

The sources said the operation would continue until the area is taken over by the Senegalese army.

They said "To achieve this, we are considering reinforcing the troops. After that, we plan to settle in the area to prevent the rebels from returning.

The Senegalese Army has, in the past week, been conducting a vast operation in this part of Casamance, commonly called North Sindian, believed to shelter rebel bases.
