Senegal's presidential candidates given Thursday deadline to file appeals against results

Dakar, Senegal (PANA) - Senegal's Constitutional Council on Wednesday asked candidates who contested last Sunday's presidential election wishing to contest the results proclaimed on Wednesday by the National Votes Census Commission to file appeals with its registry no later than midnight on Thursday, 28 March.

The Senegalese Press Agency (APS) quoted a press release by the Constitutional Council on Wednesday as saying the deadlines have been shortened by the “exceptional circumstances” occurring in the electoral process.

The National Voting Census Commission on Wednesday declared opposition leader Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye, 44, as winner of the election in the first round with 54.28% of the votes.

Former Prime Minister and candidate of the outgoing government, Amadou Ba, came second with 35.79% of the votes, the National Voting Census Commission said at the Dakar Court of Appeal.

The third of the 19 candidates, Aliou Mamadou Dia of the Unity and Rally Party (PUR), got 2.80% of the votes.

Voter turnout was 61.30%.

The official and final results of the election will be published in the coming days by the Constitutional Council.

APS said this will be followed by the swearing in of the president-elect and the official transfer of power from the outgoing head of state, Macky Sall, whose mandate ends on 2 April.

The other candidates have since Sunday night congratulated Faye for his historic victory, having been released from prison only a few days before the election.
