Senegal beat South Africa 2-0 to reach 2018 FIFA WC

Polokwane, South Africa (PANA) - Senegal qualified for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia when they beat South Africa 2-0 in their replayed Group D qualifying match at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Friday.

Senegal join Nigeria and Egypt from the Africa zone, while the final two slots will be determined at the weekend.

Senegal have an unassailable lead of 11 points, Burkina Faso have 6, the same as Cape Verde, while South Africa have 4 points. Burkina Faso will play Cape Verde while Senegal and South Africa clash again in the final group D matches on Tuesday.

Diafra Sakho put Senegal ahead after 12 minutes in Friday's match and the plight of the home team got worse when they conceded an own goal in the 38th minute from Thamsanqa  Mkhize. A well drilled Senegal side held on to triumph.

Football's governing body ordered the replay of their first round match after it found that the referee awarded an improper penalty to South Africa in the clash in November last year which South Africa won.
  
The final group D match will be played on Tuesday, but it will be an academic exercise.

This will be Senegal's second appearace at the World Cup after 2002.
