Senegal Premier Cheikh Hadjibou Soumare resigns (updated)

Dakar- Senegal (PANA) -- Senegalese Prime Minister Cheikh Hadjibou Soumare, Thurs day resigned from the government during a cabinet meeting, Senegalese Press Agen c y (APS) reported, quoting the Minister of Information, Abdoul Aziz Sow.
“Head of State, Abdoulaye Wade, at the request of Prime Minister Cheikh Hadjibou Soumare, accepted on Thursday his resignation and made the resolution to find a substitute," Sow said, adding that a new government would have to be formed foll o wing the latest development, on Saturday at the latest.
" "Wade congratulated Soumare for his competence, his discretion and tact which en abled him to coordinate the government,” he added.
Soumare's resignation follows the local, municipal and regional elections of 22 March which saw opposition parties within the coalition “Benno Siggil Senegaal” w in several municipalities, including big cities such as Dakar, Saint Louis and K a olack.
Soumare, who was born in 1951, was prior to his appointment the Deputy Minister of Economy and Finance in charge of Budget.
He was appointed Prime Minister on 19 June 2007, after legislative elections of 3 June 2007 which was boycotted by most of the opposition parties.
